Ductile Iron

ASTM A536

Farmer’s Copper Ltd. maintains an extensive inventory of ductile iron in both 65-45-12 and 80-55-06. Our ductile iron is provided in solid and rectangle bar form. Ductile iron is frequently referred to as ductile cast iron, nodular case iron, spheroidal graphite iron, or SG iron. Additionally, ASTM A536 Ductile Iron offers superior machinability to any other ferrous material, specifically combined with optimal impact, fatigue, electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability properties.

Farmer’s Copper Ltd. prides itself on customer satisfaction and has been doing so since 1920. Our knowledge is always willing to assist you with your company’s continuous cast, ductile iron needs. Call us at 409-765-9003!

Ductile Iron Shapes

Iron Comparison

Ductile Iron vs Grey Iron

Ductile iron is twice as strong as most grey cast irons. The addition of copper and tin can increase tensile and yield strength of ductile iron while nickel, copper or chromium can improve corrosion resistance. Unlike grey irons, graphite in ductile iron is in the form of nodules rather than flakes, enhancing the ductility of the alloy.

Ductile Iron Applications

Ductile iron, particularly pipe, is primarily used for potable water and sewage lines. This metal is also commonly found in automotive components such as gears and industrial applications. Other applications that ductile iron is commonly used in include machinery, power transmission, transportation, and fluid power. Ductile iron is used to create a variety of pipes, fittings, and castings.

  • Hydraulic cylinders
  • Manifolds
  • Water & Sewer Pipes
  • Fittings

DUCTILE IRON PIPE

Ductile iron is often used as a pipe as the spheroidal or nodular nature of the graphite that makes ductile iron twice the strength of cast iron. Protective linings and external coatings can be applied to both the internal & external walls of the ductile iron pipes to help prevent corrosion in harsh environments and extend the life of the ductile iron pipe.
